Humpback sounds

Happy Whale Wednesday! Passengers on Trip #2 got to listen to the lovely songs of the humpback whales. These humpbacks were singing for quite sometime and naturalist Marc Webber was able to record their songs and sounds on this recording off the Gorda Banks. No better way to celebrate Whale Wednesday!

Dining with Mobulas

These Mobulas are dining in the light of the Searcher. It was a wonderful nighttime visit from a school of mobula rays on a recent tour to Baja’s Sea of Cortez. These rays are known for their extreme jumping and breaching abilities, but this time they were slowly swimming and feeding on plankton attracted to our boat lights.

Mobula rays resemble manta rays and are in fact related. They are called flying rays, devil rays, or just mobulas. They feed by scooping prey into their mouths with the lobes on either side of their heads. So a feast was happening in this video!

Curious Gray Whales in Laguna San Ignacio

Hello Whalewatchers!

Steven Swartz, Ph.D., co-director and founder of Laguna San Ignacio Ecosystem Science Program, has spent decades researching gray whales. A question he often gets from eco-tourists is “Why are gray whales in Laguna San Ignacio ‘curious’ about people in small boats?” In this short article, he offers his thoughts on why gray whales display this curious and friendly behavior…

Also, watch the video below to see this curious and friendly behavior in action! Thank you to Robyn Carmel for sharing your footage!

Mobulas!

Passengers on Tour #1 were lucky to encounter these wonderful rays one night while they were feeding under the lights of the boat!

“Mobula rays’ elusive nature and skittish behaviour in front of divers has made them difficult to observe in the wild, except when they breach the water.”

Read the full article here, MOBULAS, and watch our video below to learn more about these amazing animals.
