Tour #3 Humpbacks singing and breaching February 27

Hello whalewatchers,
Today was a great day at the Gorda Banks offshore Cabo San Lucas. We had great looks at humpback whales starting with a big group of 8. Lots and lots of fluke shots were taken today. After that, we were lucky to find two cow/calf pairs in shallow water and they were breaching and tail lobbing and exhibiting all those great behaviors you hope for on this day.
Around lunch time we headed north to Bahia Los Frailes and everyone went ashore and saw lots of birds and had a good walk. We are headed north tonight.
More tomorrow,

Tour #2 Humpbacks Feb 13

Hello whalewatchers,
Today we spent the morning watching humpback whales. We had whales in view for the entire morning, with around a total of 30 humpbacks and seven gray whales, which was interesting to see this far south again. We had excellent looks at humpbacks, close-up looks at flukes, but not too much in the breaching behavior but some great whalewatching.
The wind came up around 11:30 so we headed for Bahia Los Frailes and everyone had a nice walk and some great bird watching. Those who chose to snorkel had great visibility and saw lots of fish. The water temp is cool at 67 degrees but for those who had a wetsuit, it wasn’t a problem.
We are headed north and the weather is good so far and the forecast looks favorable for the next few days so we are looking forward to getting up in the Sea of Cortez.

Tour #2 Bryde’s whales Feb 12

Hello whalewatchers,
Well this afternoon was very productive with plenty of whale sightings. We got great looks at a Bryde’s whalecow and calf along with 4 or 5 other Bryde’s whales. We also spotted a few humpbacks, and at the end of the day we had a good look at a fin whale cow and calf. The cow was a really big fin whale and the calf was pretty young.
All in all we had a great day offshore Bahia Magdalena, with the weather and the whale sightings..
The sunset was great again and we are looking forward to tomorrow.

Tour #2 Mid-day dolphins and humpbacks Feb 12

Hello whalewatchers,
Here’s our mid-day report from offshore Bahia Magdalena. We had calm seas, sunny skies, and a beautiful day. We came across a few dolphin this morning and the first bird we saw was a red-billed tropicbird. We also found a few humpback whales that were  traveling so we added another species of whale to our list.
A little further south we came across a megaherd of common dolphin. There had to be 2000 animals spread over a square mile area. It was really exciting to see so many dolphins! We followed one more humpback whale for awhile with great looks, but no acrobatics or fluking so we are taking a lunch break before continuing on.

More later,

Capt Art

p.s. Sally Walton took this photo of a big herd of common dolphins last year!

Tour #1 Feb 2 Gorda Banks

Hello all,
Today we are in the Gorda Banks area to look for humpbacks. Windy conditions further north weren’t good for whalewatching so we moved south. We started our day with a very large herd of common dolphin and then we added yet another species to our list. We saw a sei whale and got great looks at it. We thought it was a smaller fin whale but after looking at some great photos we determined it was definitely a sei whale.

We saw humpbacks over a large area. We were spotting mostly single whales until we came across a group of five whales and we stayed with them for quite awhile. Unfortunately the wind came up and the conditions made it hard to stay with the whales. We elected to go to Los Frailes and drop the anchor where it was calm.
We have seen 14 different species of cetaceans this trip for a total of 19 marine mammals (whales, dolphins, seals, and sea lions).
What a trip! Looking forward to the next one,
Capt Art

Tour #1 Feb 1 Islas San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Islotes

Hello whalewatchers,
We started our day with a trip into the mangroves at the south end of Isla San Jose. The tide was right and everyone enjoyed the trip very much–lots of bird life. After that we went ashore at Isla San Francisco for a nice beach walk. We decided to adjust the itinerary and go to Los Islotes and play with the sea lions. Several people snorkeled and that was good. The skiff ride was enjoyed by all as well.
We are going to travel south and hope the weather is good around the Gorda Bank area for watching humpback whales. Everyone loves humpbacks and we know there are plenty of whales there!

Tour #1 January 29 Cabo San Lucas area

Hello whalewatchers,
Another great day in Baja! We started in the Gorda Banks area and listened to humpback whales singing on the hydrophone. There were scattered bottlenose dolphin around us and a great sunrise. We saw between 30 and 40 humpback whales throughout the morning and some of their acrobatic behaviors such as breaching, flipper flapping, tail lobbing and more.
We went to Bahia Los Frailes for the afternoon and everyone went for a short walk and some people came back and got their snorkel gear went for a snorkel. The visibility was a little murky but everyone enjoyed it.
We are headed north tonight in good weather and hoping to make it to Isla San Jose.

Tour #1: Jan 28 offshore Bahia Magdalena

Hello whalewatchers,
Today we added two more species of whales and two more species of seabirds. We found humpback whales this morning–a total of 12 whales. This afternoon we saw a blue whale and it was a fluker so everyone got great looks at both types of whales.
A red-billed tropicbird circled the boat this morning and we saw a few Craveri’s murrelets as well.
The weather is phenomenal with calm seas and we are about to see a wonderful sunset.
More tomorrow.
