2016 Tour 5 Laguna San Ignacio, day 1

Hello whalewatchers: We are enjoying a great morning today in the lagoon here! On the first trip out, all the passengers got to touch a gray whale and some even kissed a whale today. There is a little bit of wind, but still plenty good for whale watching. We’re offering two more trips this afternoon before we call it a great day. Before we got into the lagoon we saw another blue whale just out side the entrance.

We had some good whalewatching this afternoon. The wind has picked up a bit but the forecast looks good for tomorrow. We’ll do some star gazing tonight and go for more whales to watch tomorrow!

Hello whalewatchers: We had a great day on San Benito Island and saw lots of elephant seals.@ Steve Lamb Passengers got to see humpback whales and a blue whale while they were walking on the island, and a sperm whale had washed up on the beach. Everyone had an opportunity to see all the whale’s features up close at this sad encounter. We left the island and then had great looks at a blue whale at very close distance. Lots of great photography this afternoon! We’re headed south to San Ignacio Lagoon tonight and will be there in the mid-morning. Wish us luck!

2016 Tour 2 Isla San Benito

Hellw whalewatchers;

We had a  great day on Isla San Benito. Passengers had really good looks at ospreys starting their nesting season and Guadalupe fur seals were active today as well. There were still some large, male beachmaster elephant seals on the beach today. The plant life was dry but there were some good birds to be seen. Two types of hummingbirds (Annas and Costas) were spotted. The highlight for those that walked up to the lighthouse got to see a blue whale not too far off the island.

San Benitos Island light houseAnd those that didn’t make it that far saw one as we left the island and started to motor south to Laguna San Ignacio. It was a very long-winded blue whale, so we only got to see it once. But we were treated to Pacific white-ided dolphins which we won’t see further south. For seabirds, we had a very good amount of Cassin’s auklets, black-vented shearwaters, about a dozen Manx shearwaters, and two peregrine falcons who were chasing seabirds.

Offshore Bahia Magdalena

Hello whalewatchers:  What an awesome day we had! We enjoyed amazing weather and our wildlife sightings started before daylight. We had common dolphins from daylight til about 8 a.m.. Shortly after that we found a pair of humpbacks, and after that we saw a cow and calf blue whale in clear, blue water with the best light possible. They were like submarines, just staying a few feet under the surface. It was amazing! After we continued on, we found  a Bryde’s whale in the same conditions-it just glided under the surface for one cycle of breaths before it was gone. We really got to see the characteristics of a Brydes whale with the three ridges between the blow hole and the tip of its rostrum. To add to the sightings list, we had sea turtle almost every 1/4 mile. I lost count of how many we saw today. We finished the day with two Cooks petrels and three humpbacks waving their flippers good evening. Wish us good luck tomorrow too!

Tour #5 Islas San Benito

Hello whalewatchers: Wildlife viewing started at daylight when we had three black footed albatrosses and a laysan albatross follow us all the way to San Benito Island.  The group had a great day on the island and saw four different pinnipeds (harbor, Guadalupe fur, and elelephant seals, and California sea lions), peregrine falcons and ospreys as well. After we got everyone aboard and left the island. we saw a blue whale and spent some time with it. The views of the whale were spot on!  We managed to parallel the whale for 15 minutes with the animal just a few feet under the surface in blue water. Then after a small bit of its tail we called it an awesome way to spend a day. So we’re off to San Ignacio lagoon to see if we can find a gray whale.

Tour #1: Bahia Agua Verde

Hello whale watchers:
We had another great day with a early walk on the peninsula at Bahia Agua Verde. The weather is still good with a few clouds and a light breeze. The temperature dropped quite a bit with a frontal passage today.
A few snorkellers went in the water at this great spot and then we headed out to look for whales. We found six different blue whales just east of Agua Verde, one of which was a fluking whale. We enjoyed some great looks, then we headed south in search of a toothed whale. We found a group of 30 or 40 bottlenose dolphin that gave us a good show.
We continued south with not much luck on whales but we did see 5 or 6 redbilled tropic birds up close. They are such pretty birds. We also found a few boobies and lots of pelicans.
As we travelled further south towards the south end of Isla San Jose, there was a little bioluminescence and good star gazing in the dark.
Looking forward to tomorrow, as usual.
Capt Art
p.s. Team Searcher is proud to announce a new member to the team. Capt Aaron Remy and his wife Ali had a 9 pound, 9 ounce baby boy today–Channing Mitchell Remy. Congratulations to them and we can’t wait for Channing to come aboard!

Tour #1: Bahia Magdalena

Hello whalewatchers,
We had a spectacular day off of Bahia Magdalena today with a lot of life.
It started off with good bird life and a group of six masked boobies (which was a treat), a Laysan albatross and plenty of shearwaters, frigatebirds and gulls.
After identifying the boobies ,we had a humpback whale breach directly behind the boat and while we circled back around to take a look we spotted two blue whales. We spent a couple of hours with the blue whales and had some great looks with clean water and good sea conditions. We saw one other blue whale in the distance.
After leaving the blue whales we came across two very large groups of long-beaked common dolphin with birds associated with them, and some jumping small tuna as well.
After a “Whales of the World” lecture in the bow, we opened the Searcher boutique for some shopping and then finished the day with breaching humpbacks. We saw at least five humpbacks breaching at different times and we were able to get a close look at one breacher. It was a great way to end the day.
Looking forward to tomorrow and more humpbacks.
More then,
Capt Art

Tour #5 Santa Catalina and a whaley day April 2

Hello whalewatchers,
Today was a glorious day at Isla Santa Catalina. We went ashore a little earlier because of the heat. The temperatures are in the mid 80’s mid-day, so earlier was better. The island is changing a little from previous trips. With the warmer temps the lizards are more active and there were lots around. Also the cardon cactus are in the process of blooming with lots of buds and a few flowers.
The snorkelling was excellent with great visibility and 70 degree water. Kapt Kenny’s Krazy Koastal Kruise had a good trip with a few bottlenose dolphin sighted.
We left at noon to look for whales and what an afternoon we had! We saw at least 15 fin whales, three different groups of common dolphin with at least 1000 animals in each group, a small group of bottlenose dolphin, and one blue whale.
There was also lots of birdlife with pelicans, boobies, murrelets, grebes and gulls.
The seas were calm and so it made for a wonderful day out looking for whales.
More tomorrow from Bahia Agua Verde,
Capt Art
