2016 Tour 3 Isla San Jose

Hello whalewatchers! We started the day with a wonderful sunrise on the red cliffs of Punta Colorado. Shortly after we went ashore for a walk and then cooled off with a snorkel. Once we got the anchor up, we found a small group of pilot whales. Now we’re on the move looking for more wildlife. Wish us luck!

Hello whalewatchers: We are enjoying wonderful weather this afternoon. We found a group of pilot whales again, around 50 of them, with some large males in the group. They were very curious around the boat. A couple even breached a few times. There were also 15 or so bottlenose dolphin mixed in with the pilot whales.  We’re headed to Isla Santa Catalina to go ashore and go for a snorkel. Then we’ll blast off around lunch to go look for some more whales.

2016 Tour 1 offshore Ensenada and Islas Todos Santos

Hello whalewatchers: Our first day of the 2016 season was pretty exciting! We found plenty of life: common dolphins, pilot whales, and four different kinds of baleen whales: gray, humpback, a single minke, and several fin whales. One humpback whale gave us a breaching show too. It was a glorious day for weather with calm seas and almost no wind. And to end the day, we enjoyed a wonderful sunset with a green flash.

Tour 4 Bahia Agua Verde

Hello whalewatchers: We had another great day with calm seas and no wind. After overnight in Agua Verde the group went ashore for a walk and a good snorkel seesion with great visibility and lots of fish. We went by Roca Solitaire for a look at some boobies and then offshore for more whales and dolphins.
We were lucky enough to see the same pair of male sperm whales in the same area. We stayed for one surfacing each and then continued south for some thing different. We saw a Bryde’s whale and got some great looks. Then a group of about 50 pilot whales. We continue to add to the species list on this trip. tour 4 pilot
We ended the day with margaritas and jumping smooth-tail mobulas. Then we anchored in Puerto Gato for sunset and a buffet on the back deck. What a day!

Tour #1: Islas San Jose and Los Islotes

Hello whalewatchers,
We enjoyed another beautiful day in sunny Baja. We started our day with a pre-breakfast skiff ride in the mangroves at Isla San Jose. Everyone enjoyed this trip and the bird list was outstanding. We left there and headed for Los Islotes to snorkel with sea lions. We came across a large herd of long-beaked common dolphin and there were at least 100 dolphins.
We arrived at Los Islotes and several people went snorkelling and loved it, along with a skiff ride along the shore.
We headed south with hopes of seeing some toothed whales to round out the species list and surprisingly enough, we found some.
At first it was a group of about 15 pilot whales and just as the sun set, we came across a group of about 30 sperm whales. The lighting wasn’t that great, but we sure had some great looks. What way to end a trip!
We are arriving in Cabo San Lucas in the morning and heading north to San Diego to prepare and pick up our next group of whalewatchers.
More next trip,
Capt Art

Tour #4 Sunset/moonrise in Baja March 18

Hello whalewatchers,

Today we started at beautiful Bahia Agua Verde with a pre-breakfast walk. One of the local fishermen guided the group up to a small cave that has some cave paintings in it. Everyone enjoyed the cave and the walk.

After breakfast we had a combo skiff ride and snorkel for those interested. The water has warmed up to the low 70’s whish is a huge improvement over the past three trips. Around lunch time we went offshore to look for a whale or two we found a cow and calf Bryde’s whale, a cow and calf blue whale, fin whales in the distance and to finish the day, we came across about 100 to 150 pilot whales. That was spectacular! The moon rise and the sunset with the colors in the sky was as good as it gets. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we shut the boat down including the generator and had complete silence with pilot whales spouting and the sunset along with the moon rise. Now it doesn’t get any better than that. It was a very powerful experience for everyone.
Headed south after the back deck buffet and margaritas.

Tour #1: Jan 25 Islas San Benito

Hello whalewatchers:

Prior to ariving at Islas San Benitos this morning, we came across a group of pilot whales and a few bottlenose dolphin mixed in with them. We were able to get close looks at the pilot whales and with the calm conditions it made even better.
After arriving and launching our skiffs, the group looked at several Guadalupe fur Seals on the way into the beach. The weather was perfect for a hike and there were lots of northern elephants to view. Some of the behavior that is prominent during this time of year includes males fighting, mating, pups nursing and there was one sighting of a birth. Pretty exciting stuff! One of the advantages to a January-February trip is the activity here at San Benitos.
After departing we came across a herd of about 500 long-beaked common dolphin right before sunset. It was a great way to end a wonderful day.
More tomorrow from Laguna San Ignacio. I can’t wait to get there.
