Paul Jones

Decades of experience make Paul a leading whale and seabird tour guide and educator for our tours. In addition to leading trips out of San Francisco Bay to the Farallon Islands where there is a large seabird colony and many species of whales, dolphins, and pinnipeds, he managed a research project studying the seabirds and marine mammals there. Paul has led trips observing orcas in British Columbia, humpback whales and other wildlife in Southeast Alaska, Belize, and Costa Rica. He also worked in Bahia Magdalena in Baja, Mexico, in addition to working aboard Searcher during the past 22 years leading trips along the West Coast of Baja and into the Gulf of California, often partnered with good friend and colleague, Marc Webber. Paul contributes to an occasional series on various topics called “Spotlight Series.”
Paul held a US Coast Guard captain’s license for 100-ton vessels for almost 30 years, sailed several oceans, taught sailing in France and the US, and currently is a navigation instructor. Paul retired from the US Environmental Protection Agency, and is now enjoying volunteering with local watershed and natural resource protection groups in the San Francisco Bay Area. He lives in Pacifica, California with his wife, and has a daughter and a son.
